Dr Maharaj joined Health Careers International in the capacity of Deputy Director of Studies at the beginning of January 2020. Prior to this she worked as a Clinical Nurse Consultant with Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network in a custodial setting as well as with the Community Forensic Mental Health Services (CFMHS). With 21 years’ experience as a mental health clinician, Dr Maharaj has worked in a range of adult mental health settings, including the acute unit, rehabilitation unit and the forensic unit within the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Research Interests
Dr Maharaj has a keen interest in research and as part of her Master of Nursing coursework degree; she undertook an Investigative Report that involved a critical analysis of the literature addressing the role of police working with people experiencing mental health problems, for which she was awarded a High Distinction.
She completed a PhD in 2011, using a mixed methods study to investigate the characteristics of people referred by the police to a psychiatric hospital, and to explore the experiences of nurses caring for police referred admissions.
