Master of Nursing

Introduction

The Master of Nursing course enables registered nurses to advance their professional knowledge, skills and behaviours to higher levels of capability in the practice setting. The proposed Master of Nursing builds upon the theoretical knowledge and skills gained by nurses in their previous courses. This Master of Nursing course will allow nurses to gain advanced knowledge and skills in the Australian Health Care context that will prepare them for management roles, educational practice roles, and research roles in hospitals, community health centres and aged care facilities in Australia.

Graduates of the Master of Nursing course will have the ability to facilitate changes in practice that will lead to the provision of culturally safe, optimal and person-centred nursing care which will result in better patient health outcomes.

* The Master of Nursing course is not accredited by ANMAC and graduates will not be eligible to register as a nurse with AHPRA.

Entry criteria

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Nursing course an applicant is required to:

  • Have completed a Bachelor of Nursing degree or an equivalent qualification;
  • Be an AHPRA registered nurse; or
  • Be a registered nurse with the Nurses’ Board/Council from the country of origin or place of residence and must have English Language proficiency as evidenced by:
    • An IELTS level of at least 6.5 with no bands less than 6, or equivalent scores in OET/PTE/other recognised English examination; or
    • Direct entry through a pass in English for Academic Purpose (EAP) course with a minimum score of 70%

IHM’s Master of Nursing will provide opportunities for graduate nurses to extend their career pathways in clinical leadership, administration, education, research and practice roles. These roles are in demand and are endorsed by private, public, primary, secondary and tertiary health care services, and in institutional and community health care settings globally.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Australian health care system in terms of policy and the organizational context of health service delivery.
  • Critically analyse and discuss the physical, psychological and social factors that affect people experiencing alterations in their health.
  • Appraise evidence-based knowledge to inform critical decision making when providing quality and safe practice.
  • Demonstrate autonomy, expert professional judgement, accountability, responsibility and leadership skills, in order to practice effectively in the context of person-centred care.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary health care team undertaking leadership roles in clinical education, clinical practice, research and management.
  • Demonstrate a well-developed understanding of socio cultural, political, legal and professional factors that influence clinical practice, focusing on sensitive, marginalised groups and aboriginal health.
  • Integrate an advanced and complex body of knowledge in the management of contemporary issues of relevance to own practice and within the discipline of nursing.
  • Apply critical reflection to synthesise and evaluate complex problems, concepts and theories to demonstrate cognitive and innovative skills in a body of knowledge or practice.

Volume of Learning and Student Work Load

A full-time student will be expected to undertake 128 credit points over a period of two years. A part- time student will undertake 128 credit points over a period of four years.

Maximum Credit

The Master of Nursing course has 128 credit points. Maximum credit allowed for the recognition of prior learning/credit transfer is 64 credit points.

  • IHM students with a Graduate Certificate in Nursing may gain up to 32 credit points (25%) towards the Master of Nursing course.
  • IHM students with a Graduate Diploma in Nursing may gain up to 64 credit points (50%) towards the Master of Nursing course.
  • Students from other universities who apply and successfully obtain recognition of prior learning (RPL), must successfully complete at least 50% of the course at IHM to be eligible to receive the IHM Master of Nursing award.

WHAT IS THE COURSE DURATION AND HOW IS IT DELIVERED?

The course duration is 2 years full time or 4 years part time. The course will be offered on campus, online and through blended mode of delivery.

WHAT WILL I GET ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE?

Students who successfully complete all of the required units of competency for this course will be issued a testamur and a Transcript.

The Master of Nursing Students must undertake and complete successfully 9 core units, 2 compulsory units and 1 elective unit within the first three semesters. One of the two electives N9003 Professional Reflection in Nursing or N9004 Professional Experience Placement has to be completed in the first semester by the student. In the final semester there is an option for the students to select either 3 theoretical units or a Nursing project.
