Introduction

The Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Non-Specialisation), is a general qualification that aims to provide qualified nurses with educational opportunities specific to the advancing role of the registered nurse, thereby facilitating their professional growth and development, this course will also help you improve your analytical skills and ability to assess patients.

This Graduate Certificate in Nursing provides students with an entry path to the Graduate Diploma in Nursing then subsequently into a Master’s degree in Nursing in Australia.

Note: If you are an international student in Australia and hold a student visa, you are required to study full-time and on-campus*. Courses taught entirely online are only available to international students studying outside Australia, or those in Australia who are not on a student visa. Online courses are not available to international students in Australia who hold a student visa.

NESTED COURSE STRUCTURE

Students may choose to exit midway through the course, in which case they may graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Nursing, consisting of four units of study over one study period full time or, for non CRICOS students, two study periods part time.

Students who have already completed a Graduate Certificate in Nursing may be eligible for advanced standing, subject to credit transfer and recognition of prior learning procedures.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

FOR ONLINE APPLICANTS

To be eligible for admission to the GCN/GDN course who wish to take the course online, the applicant must:

  • be an International graduate nurse who has completed three year of Nursing/ Bachelor of Nursing / Diploma of Nursing and be a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Board from their country of origin or practice;
  • have one year of experience as a Registered Nurse;
  • have enough computer access and computer skills in working with and knowledge of Microsoft Office courses; and
  • be able to provide evidence of an IELTS level of at least 6.5 with no band less than 6, or equivalent scores in OET/PTE or
  • pass a short academic essay in the English Language (500 – 700 words) on a topic provided by IHM with a minimum grade of 65 % from a pool of approved essay topics and attend an interview with IHM academic staff.

Applications will be accessed on a case by case basis by the course coordinator in accordance with the Student Selection and Admission Policy and Procedures for Course delivered to Overseas Students.

Unit Name

GCNNK1 – Nursing Knowledge 1

This unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and evaluate the concept of advanced nursing practice and the role of the nurse in this area. In addition, the components for a model of advanced nursing practice and specialised practices will be discussed.

Selected models of advanced nursing practice including Benner’s model of expert practice will be examined with reference to students’ clinical experience or work practice.

GCNNK2 – Nursing Knowledge 2

This unit aims to build on students’ knowledge and understanding of critical events across the lifespan and their effects on individuals and families. The content will include further understanding of acute, chronic, psychosocial, mental, rehabilitation, aged and community nursing care, principles and management of clients with consideration to an etiological, environmental, demographic and lifestyle factors, nutritional, microbiological involvement and psychosocial factors.

Pharmacological knowledge and pathophysiological manifestations and, where relevant, factors influencing morbidity and mortality are examined. Documentation forms including current documenting systems will be discussed. In addition, clinical skills are reinforced using simulated case scenarios.

GCNCP3 – Clinical Project

Students who are enrolled in this course are expected to be working for a minimum of 3 days per week in a nursing setting as this will enable them to integrate the knowledge learned in this course to work practice. However, to further enhance students’ ability to integrate theory into work practice, including the development of skills and level of decision-making expected of a nurse, this unit of study provides students with the autonomy to define and pursue specific clinical practice experiences. Such experiences will provide for synthesis and application of knowledge via observation of and participation in clinical activities.

GCNRN4 – Research in Nursing

This unit aims to provide students with research knowledge and skills required to conduct research projects appropriate to their current professional practice. It will further enhance students’ knowledge and skills in nursing research paradigms and identify the significance of research findings to nursing practice. The topics that will be included are: review of research methodologies; ethical considerations; examination and analysis of the research process; sampling techniques in qualitative and quantitative methodologies; analysis of research data; interpreting and critiquing reports; and developing a research proposal.
